Insurance for supercars cost at least $30K
Not only do few insurers in Singapore offer coverage for million-dollar supercars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis, the insurance policies do not come cheap.
In a report in the Straits Times today, insurance brokers and importers of high-end cars said that the annual premium for Ferraris can start from as high as $30,000.
Compared to a medium-sized Japanese family sedan, the premiums for a supercar are almost 30 times more.
Despite the difference in cost and make of car, the same procedures apply when claims are made.
Companies such as AXA Insurance, Libery Insurance and Chartis are one of the few insurance providers that cover supercars.
NTUC Income is one of the insurers who do not provide insurance coverage for this particular segment, according to checks made by The Straits Times.
Vice-president of branding and public relations Karen Yew said that NTUC Income prefers to focus on the needs of a mainstream market.
Owner of workshop Harmony Motors Mr Joey Lim, 45, told The Straits Times that repair bills of supercars can be costly if certain components or spare parts have to be imported.
This may not be easy for rare models like the Ferrari 599 GTO involved in the accident last Saturday that claimed three lives.
The supercar that hit a ComfortDelgro taxi cost about $1.4 million and was sold to a select few in Singapore as it had a limited production run.
Vehicle sales executive Desmond Lim who works at parallel importer Executive Automobile, which sells around 10 Ferraris a year, said: "It's impossible to find parts for a GTO in Singapore."
If a replacement car cannot be found, the insurer may opt to pay the owner the car's worth in cash, or, in the event he is not alive, to his estate.
The Straits Times said that the supercar in the accident was insured by AXA.
According to the Land Transport Authority, 17 new Ferraris were registered here as of March this year. A total of 4,149 Porsches, Maseratis, Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Aston Martins were registered here last year. This is up from 3,376 the year before.
